Jaisalmer – City of Historic Temples

Every city in Rajasthan has a historic or legendary temple. These temples are not just a place of worship for the locals but have also become a major tourist attraction in Rajasthan.

1. Tanot Mata Temple

Tanot Mata Temple is 78 km’s from Jaisalmer city and very close to Pokhran where India’s second nuclear test took place in 1999 by Army. The reason mentioned at the time of nuclear test with this temple because both Indian & Pakistani armies have a feeling of respect for this temple. A chapter of Indo-Par 1965 war took place near Tanot Mata temple. Everything got destroyed by the 3000 Pakistani tanks missiles but not even a single bullet touched the temple. This scene was also presented in 1997 Bollywood movie Border.



2. Laxminath Temple

Laxminath Temple is inside the famous Jaisalmer Fort and belongs to the Hindu deities of Vishnu & his wife Laxmi. The temples receive a large number of travelers as Jaisalmer fort is at the top of the list of places to visit in Jaisalmer. Rao Lunkaran builds this temple in 1494 and the structure & artifacts of this temple are simply astonishing and is a must see place in Jaisalmer.

3. Jain temples of Lodhruva

Lodhruva is a small city 5 Km away from Jaisalmer and is famous for its Jain Temple. This is a 900-year-old temple dedicated to 23rd Tirthankara. The temple was also destroyed by Muhammad Ghori in 1152 AD and after 800+ years it was rebuilt by locals along with government officials and they brought the temple back to its glory. Jain temples of Lodhruva are wonderful and surrounded by Sand sun dunes making it a destination to explore.

4. Chandraprabhu Temple

It is one of the seven temples constructed around 15th and 16th century dedicated to the eighth Tirthankara, Jain Prophet Chandraprabhuji. Located inside the Golden Fort, constructed in red sandstone, the Chandraprabhu Temple is a beautiful symbol of ancient Rajput architectural style.

5. Kunthanath Temple

One of the popular Jain temples in Jaisalmer, Kunthanath Temple is dedicated to Lord Kunthanath, a Jain Tirthankar. This temple is much like the Hastinapur Temple, which is also dedicated to Lord Kunthanath. Hastinapur was the birthplace of Lord Kunthanath.
